The Advantages of Long Lining

During the off season, long lining is a personal favourite of mine to encourage posture and muscle building when on a time crunch. Long lining is advantageous over in hand walking as it encourages the horse to push from behind and work in correct posture. It is often better for working the topline than riding, as it means the horse does not have to work against the saddle and rider and can really lift through the thoracic sling in the front end. I also find it works better than the equi-ami, pessoa, or other training aids for muscle building as the horse will only work in a posture, he is comfortable in – meaning they are less likely to be restricted afterwards.

Long lining is an extremely diverse tool and can be used over all terrains and environments- depending on how quiet the horse is. I like to work my horses over woodlands, varying terrain an gradients. As someone without an arena, this tool is incredible during the winter months as it allows me to work my animals in my local environment after work in the evenings, without worrying about rushing to tack up.

For max benefit, I like to use a roller with a gullet and a snaffle bridle. I also like to incorporate transitions like walk/ halt and walk/trot transitions. If I have space and time, I will also use various pole work formations.

When long-lining, the handler should stand close to the horse without being in kicking distance. The aim should be a soft, elastic rein contact with the handler keeping up with horse.

Our aim with long-lining should always be to try to get horse working long and low and pushing from behind. It is also brilliant for your horse’s confidence, as in encourages them to work without constantly seeking rider reassurance.

I particularly like this exercise for my rehabilitation animals and maintenance of my older horses.
